RACE TO THE BEACH
Mecca Laalaa is a 20 year old any parent would be proud of: university graduate, community minded and religious. She’s also the first devout Muslim woman to try to become an Australian Surf Life Saver.
For years, young Muslims from Sydney’s inland suburbs have cooled off at Cronulla beach. Then hostility between locals and Muslims developed in 2005, leading to the first open battle between Muslim and non-Muslim on Australian soil.
The summer after the riots, Mecca joins twenty other young Muslims aiming to show people how peaceful, moderate and above all, how Australian they are. But there’s a catch – Mecca has real trouble in the surf! If she passes, she’ll be a world famous role model for integration. If she fails she’ll let her community down.
